Production research

In my production research i discovered that the more professional cameras were cheaper in a large bundle pack including tripods, camera and different filters for this reason i decided to choose the canon XF305 HD camera which meant that the camera hire and equipment could be kept at a low cost and the advert made relatively cheaply. Some of the prices are listed below.

I also found that this website would help me to pay because rather than paying up front the hire company gives a second payment option unlike most other websites and hire companies. This payment method says that the deposit of 50% total cost is payed up front (non-refundable) and the rest can be payed when the equipment is returned with no overdue fees.

This camera works well because it is small and compact making it easier to carry around film with quicker saving much time and money in the editing and filming stages. The camera has a simple slide on tripod although it is very heavy duty making it harder to be knocked over by strong winds and if really bad can be pegged to the ground making it more stable. All these additions therefore i feel that the risk of equipment being damaged is dramatically reduced.
All this equipment and insurance will be carried out through the website http://www.hireacamera.com/camcorders/detail.asp?model=629 and the cameras will mean that the advert is made relatively cheaply.

Market research

when carrying out my market research i discovered that the only golf academy around the London area which is open to school pupils is Merrist Wood Golf Course which has a academy open ti all people within the ages that Glenthorne High School's golf academy appeals to. This therefore means that Merrist Wood Golf Course is a likely competitor for the golf academy and the pupils it wants to attract.

Merrist wood golf course attracts customers through the use of flyers and bringing the academy up when people play at Merrist wood and online although they do not use TV or RADIO advertising this therefore means that Glenthorne will be able to appeal to a wider range of pupils and golfers to come to the academy.

With Glenthorne using TV advertisement and the other golf academies not using such a wide range of attractive styles to interest people in the academy most of the possible pupils will go to the academy which they most like because they are more widely known through the use of the advert. Although this is the only similar course to Glenthorne's academy for golf there are others which are residential full time courses such as James Andrews Golf School. These schools are much better equipped and therefore more costly. However, Glenthorne has a golf academy which allows pupils to study golf and other subjects at the same time this means that the pupils may find Glenthorne a more realistic preposition and James Andrews Golf School to specialized even if golf is just a hobby for them.

All the websites Ive seen advertise with very little amount of videos and images. When they promote the academies they use images of the facilities and the professionals but not of any of the course and rely on the writing to incise people to join the academy this is OK for adults and younger adults although this is works fairly well as they still get a number of replies from the pupils which have an interest in the sport and the academy.

On the flyer like in my advert it shows people playing golf and people the location details such as where the academy is held in my case this is Horton Park Golf Club this is accompanied by  information surrounding the times and dates this once again is to show the applicants the times of the academy and the correct days. Without this information the academy would not happen. The colors of the flyers and my advert are also very important because they attract or repel people from certain things such as academies and the information, although at the same time the colors cannot be different from nature because it would do two things to the viewer or applicant one of which is make it seem UN-educational and the second thing is it make the flyer just appear weird and would attract attention for the wrong reasons.

Directing the music video

http://picasion.com/i/1VdE1/
http://picasion.com/i/1VdE1/

I used my script along with my storyboards to make my filming process easier in the music video this meant that while i was organizing people we could move to the filming stage very quickly and manage to move the filming process along without wasting time.

Using my planning documents helped me to arrange shots in the mise-en-scene to make it look and feel the way i intended when i started to make this music video i found that having the storyboards with me while i filmed helped me to move through shots quicker and more easily then if i had to just remember them it also allowed me to see where there should be some added shots to make the music video a lot more engaging and where the falls are in the music video.

Below is a gif of me using my planning documents to direct the actors and singer.

Evaluation of Research

I think that the most valuable research that i was given was my focus group and the questionnaire i think that this is because it gave me the bigger picture from the advert not just the media shot and overall look which limited my use on the advert. The focus group said that the advert appeared to adult for them as the target audience. I think that although this is useful advice no one could explain or tell me why the advert seemed adult and how to change it. This is also reflected in my focus group and once again although didn't know how to change it to there age more the did say that it sounded scripted and that it wasn't natural.

I think that this although I dont agree with the comments I feel that they are fair and therefore I should rethink the adverts overall look and should make a questionnaire again for before I start to think about filming the advert meaning that the audience feel that it targets them better than if i was to just ask reviews from people.

My adverts focus group worked very well because it meant that they were able to discuss the advert and pick things up that maybe will help me to make the advert better then it was before also i think that the use of discussion in the focus group meant that if one person saw a chance to improve a section but they do not know particularlly how to put it inot the words or images others may be able to understand what they are saying and help us to do so rather than just two people trying to understand the advert part.

Another reason why the focus group is better then a one-to-one conversation about the advert is because people can be more comfortable if they are surrounded by others as well as if one of the one-to-one talk was me as the adverts creator then it could be that i simply disregard that review as a mis-understanding of the adverts which can happen when you have a clear image of the advert and the others don't. In a focus group the presenter cannot say this if more then one person out of four says the same thing this means that the advert hasn't worked in the correct way which you wanted it to and therefore means that the advert should either be rethought or needs a few more shots or dialogue to make the advert understandable and appealing to the target audience.

Questionnaire results and EVALUATION

This graph is showing all the answers that i got given from people that took my questionnaire this allows me to understand what needs changing and what worked well a lot better. I used multiple questions and the advert to make these questions to make the ultimate response needed to make the advert better. As the responses show the advert appeared to adult for them as the target audience. I think that although this is useful advice no one could explain or tell me why the advert seemed adult and how to change it. This is also reflected in my focus group and once again although didn't know how to change it to there age more the did say that it sounded scripted and that it wasn't natural.

These graphs show what percentage of the people that answered various answers on the multiple choice questions for instance the first question i asked was did they enjoy the advert over 50% of people said no with half of these people saying that the advert was too adult for them and the target audience.
In the evaluation stage of the advert I as well as a focus group that was shown my advert and then gave comments on it to help me understand the pitiful's and the strengths in my advert and therefore allows me to make a more effective advert and appeal to the audience more. As well as this I made a questionnaire which I handed to 20 different people and asked them to fill out after they watched the advert to make truthful answers so that like the focus group I can make a better advert that appeals to the target audience better making it more effective. In the answers from the focus group and the questionnaires i found that the same things kept coming up in the changes and if it linked with the viewer with the people saying it sounded really scripted and that the target audience for this advert felt more adult like the parents of the pupils instead of the actual academy students.

I think that this although I dont agree with the comments is fair and therefore I should rethink the adverts overall look and should make a questionnaire again for before I start to think about filming the advert meaning that the audience feel that it targets them better than if i was to just ask reviews from people.

Self evaluation of advert

When I was starting to make the advert I started by showing some of the action shots of the academy such as shots on the golf course to hook the viewer along with the soundtrack to make it interesting. I think that this worked well because when I showed it to people who were reviewing my advert found the beginning very engaging and better than most other adverts for educational courses.

This could also be considered a persuasive technique because it means that the golf academy is both educational and exciting and therefore could persuade people to join or at least become interested in the academy and the parents watching the advert will not concerned by the course not being educational and a waste of time.

I think that the overall look and the purpose for the advert is good and is demonstrated well because it shows all the advert and shows that the golf academy is a fun but educational course and that despite the main amount of men in the sport that women are also welcome and encouraged to try it if they enjoy the sport. The clarity of the communication could be better because it does confuse people because although they like the advert and enjoy the humorous idea they didn’t understand some of the clips which were in the advert and therefore gave mixed responses about the academy. This is similar to the content effectiveness although they enjoy it they don’t like some of the shots because they give of mixed signals such as the teaching on the range shots.

I think that the technical qualities were good because I tweaked the sound levels and also fixed some  shots which didn't work well and needed to be changed by zooming and moving shots around the screen. Overall people and I were pleased with how the advert ended up and the overall look I know this by the use of the questionnaire with the responses and therefore I think that the advert does well as a advert for the golf academy because the look of it doesn’t make people want to skip it but watch to see it rest of it. Compared with my original intentions I think that the advert turned out better because of some of the adverts reviews and advice given before I finished it. I think that this advert is appropriate to the target audience because it links with their parents also to make them think that the academy works well as a training course. The adverts success was mainly down to the responses i got from the reviews and friends and family which i got from them helping me make certain choices and decisions which made the look well even though my own decisions wouldn't have chosen to do this and therefore would have made the advert less successful.

Some of the reviews and feedback which i was given was useful for instance over 5 people said that the advert was very adult and didn't seem to target them well enough and therefore would have made the advert unlike its guidelines and brief to target this specific audience i changed this by adding in some younger people to play the roles of the actors and the script to be a little less formal. Although they say this still is to adult and now the advert seems scripted the advert did seem a little bit more towards the younger generation and the target audiences age. Other reviews that i was given when asking for responses were that the last few shots seemed unnatural because the player hits a green golf ball and suddenly the ball moving is the white one this made the advert seem confusing and distracted people from the adverts information at the end of the clips. I fixed this by re-filming this section and making the confusing clip less confusing adding the green ball moving while another ball appears in a dropped scenario and this means that the audience understand the advert better when looking at it in the whole context and the reviews i received after this were better than before saying how people like the humor and the classic wit of the advert.

Some of the advertising techniques which i used in the advert were humor making people laugh therefore making them talk about the advert and remember it better than if it was just 30 seconds of this is the product buy this type of music video. I feel that this technique and style worked well for my advert because it made it seem fun and youthful. Another technique which i used was match on action which is done in the editing process. Match on action is where and edit such as a cut or swipe is added in on a movement for instance, in my advert when a golf shot is played i cut the clip just after the impact and these both were matched to the soundtrack in the background of the advert.

To start with the planning was very intense because of getting permission from Foxhills golf course and Horton Park Golf Course these took time as the paperwork needed to go through the administrative office and to the owners before an answer was given. After this the planning was still intense but the pace of it slowed down because it wasn't needed quickly. Some of the planning documents which i used included shooting schedules, treatments and storyboards after this i had to judge which idea i felt worked better. To do this i asked friends and family if they were to see one of three adverts which one would they choose i showed them the animatics and asked the question and 7 out of 10 people said the second idea which was the advert which they had seen as a animatic and i did a similar thing when choosing the music and soundtrack to make the advert appeal better to different people while focusing on the target audiences age.

To further improve my advert I would listen to the focus group and would therefore make certain shots longer to make the information stick into the audiences mind and make sure that the academy is shown as a good lesson and training session.

Conexcast Techniques of advertisment

Final work exported

To complete the advert I needed to adjust some of the music levels to make the advert hearable because some clips where louder than others and therefore removed people from the overall feel,

To finish this i needed to lower some levels i did this by adding the needed clips where they were going to be finally left and the pen tool to select the levels and this therefore allowed me to move the level up and down to increase or decrease the level of the music and i could also adjust the spread meaning more of the sound would be heard over others without mixing the clips meaning i could work on the clip with speech while leaving in the music track making it continue with the overall feel of the advert.

After i completed all these parts of the advert i was able to make the advert my final piece and upload it to the client and wait for there feedback and airing of the advert.

Uploading entry

When i uploaded all my work i had used logs to help me keep track of them and therefore making my uploading easier because i would need to optimize the clips also from there original size to large making it the correct fit for the template and the tv's in which it is seen. These were some of those documents and sheets.

Filming entry

When iwas filming at Horton park i was allowed to film all the required shots free because although it was a busty day the course has a practice hole in which the golf school can use as well as the professionals which teach there.

I agreed for 2 reasons one it meant that I could film on the course which is required to maker the advert for the client and also because it looks like the course and shows a good representation of the teaching equipment available and the surrounding area on the course. The golf academy would be able to see all of the course and the area to show them what they would be teaching on and the quality of the area all free of charge in the academy.
All my rushes which i filmed will be put into a rushes log and then kept to help me keep track of the filming process.

Storyboards advert

These were my storyboards to help me visualize the shots that will make up the advert and therefore save me time when I was actually filming and therefore in the rel life job save money. These also help me to create animatics which is a moving idea of the advert.

These storyboards were coloured to make the colour style more visualized so i can make any changes required to make the advert and shot more appealing.

EDIT decision list

This is a list of the editting desicions and the time it will include this will make me be able to edit faster saving me valuable time on the advert and therefore overall. The easiest thing about the editting decision list is it allows me to remove the clips which are unusable and therefore helps me to sift through the clips more quickly and saves the space on the memory card.

Focus group evalutation on advert

In the focus group i asked four people of two various years and showed them the advert this meant that they could give me proper feedback to make the advert better then it was when i made it the first time and as mentioned in the questionnaire evaluation it meant that the focus group could give me some very useful feedback and the responses from them is going to be more focused on the advert instead of other things in the area or at home.

Rushes log Advert

These are my rushes logs this means that i am able to link all the clips together and sort through the clips which will be useful and those which will not be useful saving me time and therefore money in a real media job.

Golf academy advert FINAL

this is my final draft for the golf academy at 6th form in Glenthorne high school i am pleased with the end product becasue i believe that it will appeal to the target audience well and it gives the relevant information. Another thing I think about the advert that i like is the soundtrack and the way it matches the shots and pace of editing i think that this therefore will help the 6th form to gain applicants to the academy.

feedback for advert rough draft

Listening to the advice and requirements that have been mentioned in this review of my first advert draft. I will include the following and advice said, a teaching shot, more variety in the shots, Area shots and also the use of music to match the clips more easily making it more professional then it is at the moment.

Advert Rough (FIRST) draft

This is my first draft of the golf academy advert and although it gives me an idea about the pace and overall look of the advert it still needs some changes such as the actors in this edit are to old for the academy and therefore may send mixed messages about the age required and being appealed to in the advert.
This is one of the parts of the advert that will be changed and others which will also need to be changed like the ending of the advert is incomplete and therefore unshowable and therefore would send a confusing message to the adverts viewers once these and small other changes are made the advert should be ready and will require the viewing of the client to make sure nothing is incorrect or if they require anything to be changed.

Advert for Academy ideas

In this advert 2 friends are playing a round of golf and one is having the best round of golf he has ever had which turns out to be his mates worst ever. and this is shown throughout the entire round until we reach the last hole where the man with a good score circles his score and puts his card in his back pocket while the other throws his in the bin.
In this idea we see that the character in the advert his hitting various shots at a hole and getting all of them without fail to go in at some way or another. Until he reaches another hole in the course which when he hits the ball his caddy turns to him and says that the ball has missed the hole. The player turns and tells the caddy do you really think so. The caddy then looks confused and we cut to a different golf course (crazy golf course) which has a family playing golf in it and the ball then hits the hole and the family turns around and looks for someone that may have thrown it we then cut to the golf course with some voice overs.

In this advert there are 2 men playing a round of golf on the 18th hole and they both miss a shot whereas one goes and knocks over a mans coffee cup they both turn to each other and then start taking pot shots at all sorts of object trying to hit the smallest things in the most obscurest of ways until they start to move off and one man notices his bag on the floor with a golf ball in it they both turn and laugh and continue on their round and walk off. In all three of these adverts the message i want to relay is that the golf academy can be a fun and educational course to be part of and that the same course is open to both men and women in the hope that it will make some females join the course making the game less of a mens sport and more mixed. Similarly for all three the target audience will be year 11's going into year 12's because this is when the academy starts and the age therefore will be 17 to 18 year olds. The content will include shots about the facilities in the golf academy and the teaching involved including the use of humour to make the target audience realise that although there is some hard educational parts to the academy then it can be fun and engaging to the participants. The style for the first advert will be educational with slight humour. The second advert will be a more cheesy advert using before and after styles and thirdly the third advert will use humour as well but depend on it more then the first.

Reserach into academy for advert

For the golf academy there is many experienced golf pro teachers as well as this there is there is a full hole separate from the course where they can practice their shots again and again with either their own golf balls or the range golf ball which are all provided through the academy.

The range is also completely free to use for the academy students to user and practice their shots endlessly without panic of time or restraints along those lines. Finally the 18hole course which is open to the public is also free to use including the 9 hole which is a small par 3 course.

The academy does have a area where the students golf clubs can be left overnight to be picked up the next morning because they will have a time table which requires them to be at the golf academy for up to 3 times a week for 2-3 hours. Transport to and from the golf course and the school will be provided from the school by a minibus or transport there of.
